10 June 1871 — Madrid
Saturday. 10th [June 1871]. Directly after breakfast I went & sat to Pal for my small picture & at 12 Henry came & joined me & he sat for his while Sr Esquivel (Pals’ brother in law) brought me home. At 3 Henry & I went to see the Exhibition of the Fomento de las Artes near the Buen Retiro. We were more struck with the ceiling of the building than anything exhibited. I suppose the ceiling is by the same man who did that in the Winter Sacristy at Toledo. One of the things most worthy of remark is a gold arab necklace found near Granada exhibited by Miro the dealer. We went to see Emilia & Mr Gayangos who is still laid up with the blow he gave his leg. We had a dinner party. Genl. Serrano was obliged to go to the Palace to dine so the Dss came alone. We had the Martos Sardoals, Bernars, Turks, Russia, Del Cerro, Dragonetti Sagasta. After dinner Serrano & an ADC. came fm the Palace but they did not stay long. The Dss talked a great deal abt Mme [illegible word]’s airs, & how pretentious she had got because she was lady to the Queen.
