14 June 1871 — Madrid | |
Wednesday. 14th [June 1871]. Began to pack & arrange things. At 5 Henry & I went to the Canitz & we went abt leaving cards & took Mme de C– with us. After dinner we went to the Bufos to hear the Spanish Opera “Fernando” in which the Hunts sang & was a benefit given for Mme Montijo’s poor. The De Martinos joined us—but we had a horrible box on the pit level & could hear nothing but the violincello & trumpets. We had a little talk with Monasterio who was leading. He said he had been so over worked he had not had time to go to see us. | |
