25 June 1871 — Langham House, Portland Place
Sunday. 25th [June 1871]. We breakfasted at 9 & went off by train to Blackheath to see Henry’s mother. We found her looking better than we cd have expected after the serious illness she has passed thro in our absence. We also found Annie (Mrs E. Layard) down there—as great a cripple as ever but with great hopes of recovering. We had luncheon at 2 & at 4.30 we returned to London. We found the Eliots & May & Edward Pons only at T & Lady George Gordon came also. Maria came up to see how the mother was getting & found her still very ill. Maria stayed dinner & returned home by train. Adeline came after dinner.
