22 August 1871 — Würzburg
Tuesday. 22nd August [1871]. Mrs Burr was not well eno’ to go out so Henry, Arthur & I set off to the St Laurenz Kirche. En route we met the Rates driving & so we got into their carriage & drove to several churches till 2 o’cl when we had lunch. After lunch we went to see the picture gallery & had ices & did some shopping—the Rathhouse wh is very interesting & then we went back & fetched Mrs B & took her [for] a drive. Driving under the gateway of the town Alice spied some rootamararia fern & insisted upon jumping down & Arthur helped her to dig out some with her parasol much to the astonishment of the sober well behaved passers by. We then drove to the Rates hotel & had supper with them at abt 8½. After supper while sitting on the balcony taking our coffee the gentlemen smoking & all chatting came a knock at the door & in walked my brother Arthur to my astonishment & delight. He had come straight by Paris & Frankfurt & was going to [go] a little way with us. At abt 10 we went back to the hotel & we here parted with the Rates to our regret. They go tomorrow to Marienbad & we to Munich.
