23 August 1871 — Würzburg
Wednesday. 23rd August [1871]. It was very hot so I did not go out in the morng but Henry & the Arthurs went to see the torture chamber & Inquisition implements. At abt 2 we went to the station but there was a most violent storm & heavy rain & we nearly got doused getting in & out of the omnibus. We had telegraphed for rooms at 3 hotels & found no rooms to be got so at the last moment Henry telegraphed to Sir H. Howard to ask him to find us rooms. When we reached Munich at 6 we were in pleasing uncertainty as to whether we had quarters for the night. A servant met us & said he had succeeded in finding us room at the Augsburger Hof wh was close to the station wh we found good but very noisy, however we were only too thankful to have any rooms at all. The landlord was obliged to get Arthur G. a room with               .
