24 August 1871 — Munich
Thursday. 24th August [1871]. The Arthurs, Henry & I went out to see one or 2 churches & we also went to the B. Leg: to ask for letters & for the address of a Dr to go & see Mrs Burr that we might be satisfied her face was all right. Mr Henage saw us at the Leg: door & recommended us a German Dr Ranke. He also looked at little Arthur’s eye & said he fancied he saw a spot in it & he would like him to see an occulist. We all went after luncheon to the old picture gallery & then went to the occulist & Henry took in Arthur. Henry soon came back saying the Dr had looked at Arthur’s eye thro’ a powerful glass & found that there was a tiny bit of fluid in the pupil of the eye & he must at once give the boy chloroform & cut it out. Mrs B. got out & sat with Arthur & Henry & I rushed off to Ranke’s to get him to administer the chloroform. He was not at home & his wife sent us word that if we went to the Lecture house before 4 we might catch him. It was 5 minutes to the hour so we dashed off & just caught him in time; we took him off to the occulist & he & Henry remained with Arthur & I & Mrs Burr went home. Soon after came Henry with Ranke & Arthur carried on a mans shoulder & both his eyes bandaged. The operation had been done but Arthur must keep his bed for 10 days or so. We drove to great statue of Bavaria before dinner.
