9 September 1871 — Sondrio
Saturday. 9th September [1871]. Did not start very early & took the post & drove to Colico. We got there abt 1½ & drove at once to the steamer. We there bought a lot of fruit as many grapes & figs as we cd want & ordered some luncheon on the steamer. In 1½ hour we got to Varenna & went to Marchiones’ hotel. Sat out on the terrace writing. We discovered that the Holfords were staying here & abt 6 o’cl: Mrs Holford came in from rowing & she & Hy & I sat on the terrace talking. We arranged to dine together on the terrace & as soon as Mr Holford & their girl Minnie came in from their walk we dined out of doors & sat out talking till 9½ & then went to bed–
