10 September 1871 — Varenna
Sunday. 10th [September 1871]. We started a little after 8 in an open boat to row to Lecco. We had to catch the 12.20 train & only just managed it. An hour took us to Bergamo. We went to the Hotel d’Italia & after taking a little lunch we rested a little as I had a headache & at 3½ Henry & I went out driving. We went to the Picture gallery where are some lovely pictures—especially some wonderful Moroni portraits. We then drove to the upper town to the Cathedral & saw the lovely tomb in the chapel & thence went into the cathedral where is some fine inlaid work. On the exterior are some remnants of frescoes wh Henry said he had once traced off on paper—but they were then in a far more perfect state he said. We took a lovely drive round the upper town & had a wonderful view all over the plain. We could see Milan Cathedral plainly on the horizon but it was too misty to see the mountains. Bergamo fair is now going on & the whole town is in a state of excitement. We got home abt 5½ & as my head still ached I took off my things & laid down. Hill made me some tea. I did not get up to dinner & went early to bed but the noise in the streets all night was tremendous fm the fairing people.
