11 September 1871 — Bergamo
Monday. 11th September [1871]. Breakfasted abt 9 & then Henry & I went off to the fair it was a very animated scene & very amusing walking down the avenues between the booths. We went to a certain chemist’s whose father had been a bric a brac collector– They were a few pictures but nothing we cared to buy so we went home & prepared to start at 10½. We took the express for Venice. I was very hot & dreadfully dusty. At Verona there was 20 mins: for feeding. I said to Henry “there is Sir James Hudson”– He said that I had made a mistake. I was sure I had recognised his peculiar figure even from the back & a few minutes afterwards we found it was he. We were delighted to meet & he came into our coupé & as he was going to Venice for 2 nights he came with us to Giacamos’. Giacomo & Mario the gondolier met us & also Mr Rawdon Brown who looks thinner & more peculiar than ever– We went at once to the Pension Suisse, installed ourselves & got our dinner. We then went out to the Giardino to get ices & hear the band. In a few minutes we heard the serenaders coming down the Canals & took to our gondola to join them. There were 2 boats one with a piano & violinists amongst whom was a woman who played very well & whom I remember when we were last here 2 years ago. The other boat contained the singers. We followed them down to the Rialto where we all stopped till 11 o’cl: when we thought it time to go home & to bed.
