19 September 1871 — Venice
Tuesday. 19th September [1871]. We left Venice by 9.50 train. Mr R. Brown met us at the station with his gondolier “Toni” & Giacomo went to see us off & presented me with a lovely bouquet. We were lucky in getting a compartment to ourselves & when we changed at Bologna we only had one fellow passenger– Once the train came to a sudden stop & we found that a bridge had been carried away by a landslip & it was being repaired. However after sending on our engine to try its strength it was found to be safe & we passed over. Our train was abt 1¼ hour late & we arrived at Florence abt 9. We found the Sloane servants & carriage waiting for us & in half an hour we were at Villa Careggi. Mr S. met us at the door—Mrs S. came toddling after & Monsignor Stonor brought up the rear the latter being also on a visit to the Sloanes. We had some tea & other refreshments & soon went to bed.
