17 October 1871 — Madrid
Tuesday. 17th October [1871]. I went to the dentist & on to breakfast with Dss de la Torre & stayed with her all the morning. They are now in their small hotel next to the Bullring & it seemed very odd to find them in such a small house after the size of their former habitations the Palace & the Presidencia. However the Dss seemed very happy & contented & much happier than when she was worried by having Serrano in office & in constant danger of assassination. Henry came to fetch me home abt 2 o’cl. In the afternoon several people called the Ochoas & Del Cerro to say we are to have our audience of the K. & Queen tomorrow. Our grey parrot wh we have bought arrived. He seems to be very tame & good tempered. The 2 Mmes Riaño came to dine with us & spent the eveng. Palmaroli also dined with us.
