18 October 1871 — Madrid
Wednesday. 18th October [1871]. I wrote in the morning. At 3 we went to the Palace. The Queen received us in the usual small room, asked to take seats & began to talk & in a few minutes the King arrived. It was the first time I had seen him out of uniform & I was struck by his good looks & nice manners wh are immensely improved as he has quite lost that stiff reserved awkward air he had on his arrival in Spain. He also wears his hair parted in the middle & brushed straight down. He talked abt La Granja wh he said he did not like but said that he had spent a very short time there, having been constantly on the road between there & Madrid on account of the constant Ministerial “crises” wh he declared came once a week. They made enquiries abt our Queen & also talked of the King’s visit to Catalonia & his intended visit in the spring to Andalusia & then we took our leave. We paid some other visits & came in at 5. After dinner the De Martinos came in for ½ an hour in the evening en route for the opera.
