4 January 1872 — Madrid
Thursday. 4th January [1872]. Wrote in the morning, having a long despatch to copy for Henry. After lunch I went out to see the Dss of Prim & to explain to her that Henry’s cold had prevented his going to the Requiem given by the Govt for Prim nor the one she had given on 1st. I found S. Monteverde there a lady I did not know. She showed me a marble bust of Prim wh the King has brought to her from his father (the King of Italy) on 1st– I thence went to see the Dss de la Torre & had a chat with her & then went to see Elisabeth de Martino whom I found in bed with a cold– I stayed some time with her & came home to tea & found Mme & Bernadine d’Aylton waiting for me– They had tea & stayed talking some time. We had a quiet evening & I wrote a long letter to Maria.
