5 January 1872 — Madrid
Friday. 5th January [1872]. Had a drawing lesson of Esquivel & wrote notes– After lunch I drove out to pay some visits—but as it was showery & damp I did not stay out long. I went to see Miss Sickles to make an arrangement abt Henry’s dining there without me. Met Genl Sherman there & his ADCs—Col Grant (son of the President) & another whose name I did not arrive at. I then went to see the Marchesa Dragonetti. They have very pretty apartments in the Entresol of the Palace. One enters by a door in the Patio del Armeria– We talked abt the Queens charities & we agreed to go together to see a Crèche just built for the washerwomen’s children. Mr Ffrench came to tea. After dinner we went to the Palace & I had a long talk with the Queen who sat some time between Mme de Bouillé & me. H.M. was very nicely dressed in green silk with brussels flowers—diamond tiara & necklace of diamonds & emeralds & pearl drops– There was dancing tonight for the 1st time & it was very successful. We danced in the room in wh they had dined (with the red velvet curtains embroidered in gold) & it was a great success– I only danced once with the Duke of Fernan Nunez—but we stayed till just 12.
