12 January 1872 — Madrid
Friday. 12th [January 1872]. There was the usual Palace reception at which we were all very much scandalized by Mme Barral’s (the Italian Min: wife) dress. She wore a square cut low gown without any sleeves—her hair in 2 plaits down on each side & her head stuck round with the skewers worn by the Italian peasants. When she lifted her arm to valse the effect made by having no sleeve to her dress was disgusting. The dancing went off very well. The Fernan Nuñez & several others had dined & there were several new people—such as the Dukes of Almodovar.
