1 March 1872 — Madrid
Friday. 1st March [1872]. Breakfasted at 9 & Henry took his walk & I practised the guitar, wrote letters &c. till luncheon– Henry went to Sr Gato de Lema’s to sit to a gentleman who is going to put him into a picture of Mr G. de L’s room. He returned at 3 & we then went for a ride– It is the 1st ride I have been since the winter began. We went round the outskirts of the town to the Fuente then took 2 turns & came home—& read the account in the papers of the Thanksgiving Day in London. Just after dinner Henry got a telegram to say that a lad of 17 had got into the gardens of Buckingham Palace & going up to the Queen whilst she was walking there had presented an unloaded pistol at her– He was at once seized & supposed to be a maniac. We went to the Barrals in the evening & of course we were wailed on all sides with enquiries & condolences on the subject. The weather today was hot & sultry a kind of scirocco wind blowing.
