3 March 1872 — Madrid
Sunday. 3rd [March 1872]. We had no service today on account of Mr Whyte’s being ill so I wrote a lot of letters. At ¼ I went off to fetch Clarita & we went to the Concert at the Circo de Madrid where we joined Henry who had walked there. It was a very good concert & they played Beethoven’s Septett but the heat was over powering & the smoking sickening—so that I was too glad when it was over. Clarita & I left some cards & then went home to tea– The Legation dined as usual & Mr Gay—but I had such a headache that I was obliged to leave them & go off to bed after dinner.
