4 March 1872 — Madrid | |
Monday. 4th [March 1872]. Palmaroli came to give me a drawing lesson instead of Esq: who was busy. Directly after lunch I went out & called for Emilia & we went to a fan shop where we found some nice old fans. At 1st sight of them I became dreadfully excited over them & longed to buy all (there were abt 60!). However we chose out 30 & brought them home for Henry to see– He very much damped my ardour by saying they were not well painted & very dear, so I contented myself with buying 3. We had a small dinner party for the Marquis of Montemar who is over here from his post in Italy for a few days– The Silvelas, Barrals, Ulloas & Sr Llorente also dined. A good many people came after dinner amongst whom was Sr Ojeda who brought with him Herr Beck the pianist. He played twice & very well– He has great execution & plays with delicacy of fingering & taste. Mr Hunt also sang & was greatly applauded. We went to bed abt 12½. | |
