5 March 1872 — Madrid
Tuesday. 5th [March 1872]. Rather tired & got up late. After luncheon Henry went to the Picture Gallery & there I joined him. Found Mme de Vernouillet there with her baby– Saw also Grau & the Director Sr Gisbert. Mme de Canitz & Eliz: & Mme d’Aylton & the 2 girls came to 5 tea & we had a great “gown” talk. Mr Gay: & Emilia dined with us & afterwards we went to the F. Embassy & sent Emilia home. I had rather an amusing evening as I talked Spanish all the time with Bss de Andilla, her daughter Mme Sta Cruz & Css de Almina. As usual the rest of the company was wonderful & unknown to me. There were little sugared cakes for tea with “Republique Francaise” written on them in pink sugar! Mme d’Almina who was in very good humour begged us all to eat some of the caramels &c that they might be obliged to give us fresh ones next Tuesday!
