6 March 1872 — Madrid
Wednesday. 6th March [1872]. At ¼ 11 I went off to breakfast with Dss de la Torre altho it was a drowning morning. I found her rather low abt politics. She said Serrano was getting “découragé” because he would like to put himself at the head of the Army to defend the dynasty but the King would not let him. I got back soon after one & found Eliz: had arrived & she & Henry were at lunch. She stayed with me till 4. After she was gone I had a visit from Mr Doria our Secty at Lisbon who is passing thro’ on a visit to Italy. Mr Bauer came & offered us his box at the Opera so we dined at 7 & the Hunts came & we took them to hear “Dinorah”. La Tiberini did not sing well & we did not stay till the end. The only man who visited us there was Albareda now Govr of Madrid.
