17 March 1872 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 17th [March 1872]. We went to church in the morning & there was a very good congregation as there are a good many English on their way to Seville for the Holy Week. Mme Blondeel (his bride an American widow) spoke to me & I was agreeably surprised at her appearance—she is dark & ladylike. We lunched at 1 & went to the Concert by 2. We had a very good selection amongst other things the overture of Leonora & the “Midsummer night’s dream”—but the heat, draught & smoke gave me a headache wh made me very stupid all dinner time & very poor company. We had Messrs Ash: Go: & Sey: Mr Gay. | |
