24 April 1872 — Madrid
Wednesday. 24th [April 1872]. Just as I was dressed for breakfast there came a ring at the door & in walked Mr & Mrs Hambro. We had been expecting them some time but had thought they would have telegraphed beforehand. It appeared that they had done so but things being in such a state of confusion on acct of the Carlists we did not get the telegram till after their arrival. We gave them breakfast & then made them rest. The day of the opening of the Cortes. The ceremony was at the senate opposite so we had to adorn our balconies with all our silks & stuffs. At 1 I dressed “de gala” that is low gown but no train & we went over to the Senate. The Dip: box is very small & the house it self is half the size of the Congress– The Queen came a few minutes before the King & went to a small box opposite ours. She was in light blue silk with a Spanish blonde mantilla & a diamond necklace– The Dss de la Torre was in green velvet with the white mantilla & the Dss of Almina in blue with the mantilla. As the King entered he bowed twice to the Q. on his way to take his place on the Throne– He sat down giving the word “Sentado” for the deputies to be seated—& read his speech wh lasted abt 20 minutes– Sagasta declared the Cortes opened & the whole was over. There were cries of Viva el Rey & one stupid man cried “y muero los Carlistas”– We walked home—& got our lunch– Later we took a drive in the Fuente.
