29 April 1872 — Toledo | |
Monday. 29th [April 1872]. After breakfast we went off to the shoemakers to see if we could find anything old to buy. We asked Sr Herencia if he had any old stuffs upon which he called his wife who was a tidy old lady but so fat she was like a ball. She invited us up into her parlour & rolled up the stairs before us. We were first obliged to examine & admire the handyworks of her son “chico” who is an artist studying at Madrid. She then pulled out of her drawers some pieces of stuff & by degrees cleared them & also brought some from an inner chamber. Bargaining & chattering—we spent till abt 2 oclock. The old husband came up & we had to bargain over with them & only just got back in time for luncheon– Henry, Morelli &c then went off to the Alcazar & I stayed at home. We dined early & set off walking to the station. At the Plaza Susan & I got into the omnibus & drove the rest of the way. At the station was a regiment of soldiers who were going to Madrid. An official at the station came to Henry to tell him there was news for him from Madrid that a bridge had been blown up on the Southern line & the traffic that way was stopped so we were glad Mr Hambro had given up his intention of going to Seville. At the station at Madrid we were met by Col. Fitch with the news that there had been an alarm of a republican rising & great anxiety prevailed but we broke away from the Col & flew home to our tea & poached eggs & bed– | |
