1 May 1872 — Madrid
Wednesday. 1st May [1872]. I went to breakfast with Dss de la Torre & found her still very anxious & said she had had a great alarm last night having received a message from the Minister of war saying a republican rising was expected & she had better go to the Ministry with the children. She dragged up the poor little wretches & was on the point of leaving her house when Topete sent her word to stay where she was & he would fetch her away himself if there was any real danger– On my way home I called on Mme Dragonetti who said she was very anxious, her husband having received an anon letter to say that if he went out at a certain hour he would be assassinated. He had insisted upon going out at that time & nothing had happened to him. We had a visit from Mme Bauer asking us all to dine with them on Saturday. At 5 we drove to the Fuente. Mrs Burr, Susan & CH & after dinner Henry, the H’s & I went to the Price’s Circus which we liked very much.
