15 May 1872 — En route to Cordova
Wednesday. 15th May [1872]. At abt 6 in the morning we found ourselves stopping at the bridge which had likely been destroyed, some say by Carlists, but it is generally known to have been by turned off workers on the railway. However it is so far repaired that the train was passed over it bodily only slowly. Henry & Morelli got soon after into our compartment & we got some breakfast at Mengibar & got to Cordova at 1 o’cl. There we were met by D. Juan Rutledge & D. Duncan Shaw’s carriage & nephew who took us to the hotel—we lunched & then S & I rested for 2 hours—got up & with Henry & D. Juan we walked to the cathedral. Every time I see it it enchants me more & I love Cordova– We went afterwards towards the bridge & then back to the hotel by the old Jew’s quarter & round a part of the outside walls of the town where we saw booths & stalls being put up for the approaching fair.
