25 May 1872 — Yllora | |
Saturday. 25th [May 1872]. We breakfasted at 8 & directly after Mme Colibert & I drove out. Henry & Mr C. rode. We went to an olive yard where there were excavations being made & where a skeleton had been found in a lead coffin with a gold ring set with an onyx engraved with a dolphin, had been found under a Roman tower. Other foundations of moorish houses had been also discovered. After looking abt there we drove on to Yllora wh is supposed to be called this from Queen Isabella’s having shed tears at the cost of life at the taking of Granada. Yllora is built on the side of the mountain under a great rock on wh are the remains of a moorish castle. The country round is most fertile & covered with the lovliest & most varied wild flowers. We returned to La Torre to lunch & at 3 Henry & I started in the carriage & the Coliberts on horseback—with 2 mounted guards & drove to Soto de Roma the Duke’s other property where we alighted & made acquaintance with Mrs Coliberts brother [who] is agent there—we had some oranges & biscuits—looked over the house which is a pretty good one & started off under the protection of 2 guards & an outrider for Granada. The road was a very bad one being nearly the whole way merely a beaten track across the fields. We got back to the Siete Suelos abt 7 & dined at 8. We find Susan still suffering from her face. | |
