7 June 1872 — Madrid | |
Friday. 7th [June 1872]. Susan went & walked with Emilia. I stayed in & wrote. At 4 we went to the Palace. Dragonetti met us & showed us over the greater part of it. From there we drove to Salamanca’s place at Caravanchel Vista Allegre—& we came home very tired of wandering thro’ large rooms & staring at bad pictures. The old man who showed us Salamanca’s pictures made us roar by telling us a hideous picture of 2 monks was “a Murillo, in his first style!” Unpleasant hot wind blowing all day. | |
