21 June 1872 — Madrid | |
Friday. 21st June [1872]. Susan read to me & we were obliged to sit in a darkened room till dinner at 6½. We then went for a drive & took Emilia. We went to the Retiro gardens where there was the open air theatre & we took seats near the outside so that we might get away when we liked. The performance was nothing particular but the tout ensemble was pretty. We took Emilia home & then went home ourselves as the Hunts were coming. He sang once to Susan & then Mr Hambro arrived from Granada. We had not expected him till tomorrow as we did not know that the trains had been changed. | |
