23 June 1872 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 23rd [June 1872]. I woke with a headache & could not go down to church so Susan went without me & there was no music. Mr Whyte came up after service to take leave of Susan & to say there would be no longer any service till autumn. After lunch I was obliged to go & lie down in the dark in my room & took some camomile & sage tea which cured my headache. Susan read to me & we nearly finished “Lorna”– The Ayltons called & came in to my room to see me, cackled away to Susan & took leave of her– Then came the “Mariana” with lace for Susan to look at—in the midst of wh she had to depart. Henry accompanied them to the station. There was a great thunderstorm but it did not break here; still the air was much cooled– Silvela & Capt Vivian (a messenger who arrived today) & Messrs Sey & Go. dined. At 11 we ordered the carriage & took Silvela for a drive—it is the eve of St John & the Prado was full of people & the air reeking with boiling oil to make buñuelos—& what is called a “Verbena” was going on. | |
