6 July 1872 — Paris | |
Saturday. 6th July [1872]. Henry went out in the morning & I sat quietly reading. Mercier called to see Henry & was very sorry not to meet him but when Henry came in he said Lord Lyons had invited us to dinner & was also going to invite the Merciers. After lunch we went out together shopping & I ordered 2 gowns at the ruinous price of £32 apiece. At 7 we dined with Lord Lyons. Met the Merciers & the Wyndams, Mr Sheffield & Mr Atlee all attached to the Embassy. After dinner we sat out in the garden & walked down to the end of the garden where we cd quite hear the singing in the Café des Ambassadeurs. Had a long conversation with Mr Atlee who is learned on headaches & recommended me to try to cure mine by taking Valerian. | |
