10 July 1872 — Langham House, Portland Place
Wednesday. 10th [July 1872]. Henry & I went down by 12 o’cl: train to Blackheath to see his mother. We lunched with her & left her again at 4 o’cl: I got home to tea. Had visits from Lady Wharncliffe who is looking very ill & also Mr Hammond (of the F.O.). We dined with the Rates– Met Dr & Mrs Vaughan—Ld & Lady A. Russell, Col & Mrs Gordon, Mr Stewart &c– Dr Vaughan took me to dinner & plagued me with questions abt Spain; on the other side I had Mr Rate. At 11 B. called for us & we went to a great party at the F.O. The Wales’ & Tecks were there. There were crowds of people there & one saw all ones friends.
