13 July 1872 — Langham House, Portland Place
Saturday. 13th [July 1872]. I went in the morng to Marshall & Snelgrove’s & there met Susan Hambro & she took me shopping & then went back to lunch with us. All except the M were at the cricket match. Arthur Burr had been to see us on his way & Mr & Mrs Burr came with him. Maria drove up just after luncheon & took me with her to Roehampton. Henry joined us by train. We had to dress early to go & dine with the Murrays at Wimbledon. Met there Sir Bartle & 2 Miss Freers, Pentland, J. Fergusson Dr Smith & Mr Coke. I sat between Mr Murray & Pentland. Fergy had by Mrs M’s desire taken the seat next me when the servant thinking he had the wrong place took him by the shoulders & removed him to make place for old Pentland who was a great bore & very deaf. Maria stayed at home as she could not have the baby. We got home abt 11. I thought John Murray very much aged & Mrs M. very much broken from the loss of a son last year.
