1 August 1872 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Thursday. 1st August [1872]. ] We left Aldermaston by an early train & went up to town. Arthur’s brougham met us & we did some shopping & then went to Langham Hse. Miss Hogarth & Miss Dickens & Mr De Gex lunched with us. In the afternoon I drove down to see Connie. Maria & Rd dined with us also Lord Somers & Fergy & we had a most cheery dinner as Lord S. was full of stories & jokes at wh he laughed more heartily than any one. Just before dinner Mr Rutledge of Cordova came to see us being here on a holiday– He was full of the attempted assassination of the K. & Q. of Spain as he was in Madrid at the time– Nothing seems to have yet been found out. Mr Otway also came to excuse himself from dining with us as he had something coming on in the House.
