20 August 1872 — Champfer
Tuesday. 20th [August 1872]. Drove down to the springs & there were met by Morelli who introduced us to lots of Italians & to whom we introduced Css Pisani. We then walked up to Champfer thro’ the wood. We found that Maria & Rd had walked off to Pontresina—so we dined at 1 with Morelli & then took an Einspänner & drove with him to St Moritz & he took us to call on the Marquise d’Alfieri, Cavour’s favorite niece. She was not well & was on her sofa but received us very kindly especially as Henry was such a friend of Cavour’s. She is exceptionally ugly has a bad complexion & a frightful nose & has a frightful treble voice—notwithstanding she was most agreeable & talked well– She has long clever hands. After paying this visit & leaving her with her 2 daughters pleasing but very plain girls we went on towards Celerina meaning to call on some Italian ladies, friends of Henry’s, we met them en route so Henry talked to them having got out of the carriage & we drove to Bever to see the house Morelli’s friend Mr Melli had offered to lend us. It was quite shut up & we had to grope abt & open the shutters. It is a capital house for hunters & there were all the rooms with the owners boots, hats, shot &c—altho’ he has not been there for 12 years. We went down into the cellar where he has some fine wine especially some sent up by M Ricasoli of his own making to be kept. We took 3 bottles—some Margaux—some Ricasoli & a bottle of champagne of 1847 & carried them off. We then locked up the house & went back to Samaden to the “Bernina” where Morelli gave us coffee. We met there a M. Nesselrode a friend of Henry’s who joined us. It was just the time of the ½ past 5 table d’hôte & the room where it was held was enormous & there are 2 long tables; it is an immense hotel. While waiting for the carriage a child begged me to buy some edelweiss in a pot wh she had planted & I bought it & took it back to Maria. It was seven when we got back to Champfer & we found that Maria & Rd had only just got back having been beguiled into going to the Rosegg glacier & then having walked on to Pontresina & there got an einspänner. I got cold coming home & was very unwell & had to go to bed directly after supper–
