21 August 1872 — Champfer
Wednesday. 21st August [1872]. We went down to the springs in the Bus & walked back; as we passed the little house near the torrent wh Spence has just bought he put his head out of an upper window & called us in. We found him giving a breakfast to some Polish, Americans & an Italian Genl Boyne– They were in a room with 2 beds there being no sitting room– They were all talking out loud & screaming. Spence & Boyne were singing scraps of recitative. The Americans were fast looking but rather handsome especially the daughter of the elderly lady who has good features & lovely eyes but all is spoilt by the quantities of powder she put on her face. After dinner Morelli & Signor Visconti Venosta the present Min: of F. Affairs in Italy came to see us– Visconti does not look Italian being tall thin & nearly red haired with blue eyes– He is rather silent & very gentlemanlike. They stayed had coffee smoked & talked—then went back to Samaden abt 3½. I then went out sketching with Henry & had just time to draw in a Swiss cottage before it got too cold. Maria & Rd had been to the Morteratsch glacier & we found they had returned abt 5. Henry & I then started walking up the hill behind the hotel & had a lovely walk as we got pretty high up in the Alps. We got lots of wild pinks & flowers & came down a very narrow path wh brought us down on the other side of the hotel just in time for supper. After supper Spence came in & sat with us some time chattering away till bed time.
