26 August 1872 — Champfer
Monday. 26th August [1872]. We started soon after 7 with 4 horses in a large carriage—the luggage packed behind & Hill in front. We went through St Moritz, Samaden & Bevers & then by the Albula Pass wh is a very wild & desolate scene, but very grand– We stopped to lunch at a place called Bergün & after 2 hours rest went on to Thusis– The road from Bergün & Tiefencasten is very wonderful being some time carried along the face of the perpendicular rock & coming thro’ the narrowest gorges. We got to Thusis abt 5 o’cl having had a lovely drive & splendid cloudless weather. I was tired & headachy & glad to get early to bed. Nice Inn. But bad food. The Via Malas.
