27 August 1872 — Thusis
Tuesday. 27th [August 1872]. We left Thusis soon after 7 & the morning was cloudy & by the time we got to the Splugen Inn it was raining in torrents so that we could not get out of the carriage to get some lovely ferns wh we saw growing in great varieties. Lunched at Splugen & had very good food. We came to Splugen by the Via Mala which is a very fine gorge but very narrow & the road is made in the rock & crosses the torrent several times. The ascent of the San Bernadino from Splugen is very rapid & we went up a great number of zigzags overhanging each other but it rained so hard that we cd see no views. When we reached the top the rain began to cease & we had fine weather for the descent. We saw the parsley fern growing in numerous masses & Maria got a lot of it. We got down to the Village of San Bernardino abt 4.30 & went to the “Brocco”. We went out for a walk before dinner & had a hunt for ferns & got some oak & beech ferns. Dined at the table d’hôte at 7. There were a good many people. There are mineral springs here & a good many people come to take the waters. Afterwards we sat in the coffee room & had coffee & then went early to bed–
