28 August 1872 — San Bernardino
Wednesday. 28th [August 1872]. The rain was spitting when we left but as we got lower down into the valley it got fine & we left the rain behind us. We had a lovely drive—there were lovely alps & splendid waterfalls old castles vines, hops, clematis chestnuts walnuts &c. We went on straight to Bellinzona 12 hours without stopping. At Bellinzona we went to the “Angelo” an old fashioned Italian Inn where we had an excellent lunch & then we took a walk in the town & bought figs. We went into the church wh was hideous all restored & plaistered over– We then drove on & in 2 hours got to Locarno on the Lago Maggiore & got there abt 5. We had a cup of tea & then started off to the convent of the Madonna del Sasso wh is built up on a hill behind Locarno. It is a most steep ascent & the road has been partly washed away by the torrent wh it appears swelled by a storm on 7th & swept down with such fury as nearly to devastate the town– We had to walk up the bed of the torrent & so managed to get up– The Convent is one of the most picturesque things ever seen & Henry managed to drag me up to a little chapel above it where one has a magnificent view of the convent with its arcade & stations with a background of mountains & lake. We got down again abt 6½ o’cl & dined at 7.
