29 August 1872 — Locarno
Thursday. 29th [August 1872]. We breakfasted at 8 & I sat out on the balcony & sketched & I got Henry to hold the umbrella as I was in the full sun. I managed to get a scribble before we left by the 10.30 steamer. Maria & Rd went into the marketplace as it was market day & were nearly too late for the boat. We went to Baveno & got there abt 2.30. Had some lunch & then took a small boat & went over to the Isola Madre & went round the garden which is full of beautiful & rare plants. The gardener very good naturedly gave us some plants of maidenhair & other ferns wh grow wild in the walls. We got back to dinner at table d’hôte at 7. Sat out for coffee in the garden. Wrote to Blanche.
