1 September 1872 — Baveno
Sunday. 1st September 1872. We breakfasted at 8 & then set out to drive to the lake of Orta– It was a lovely day but the sun hot. Just as we got near Orta one of our horses shied in passing a cat & our carriage was jammed up against the wall & the springs were broken. We jumped out at once & being near the town walked on & left the vehicle to follow. We ordered our lunch & then took a boat & rowed to the island– We found service going on at the church & looking through the door had a most picturesque view of the priest preaching. We walked round the island & waited outside the church listening to the organ wh was well played & the music old fashioned & good– When the service was over we went in & looked at the frescoes by Gaudenzio Ferrari & then rowed off to Orta & had our lunch– We then went by the gardens of a villa belonging to some Count to the Monte Sacro & went round the chapels wh are painted by G. Ferrari & his pupils & have very curious terra cotta figures representing the life of St Francis de Assisi. We walked back to the Inn & found after some delay our carriage mended & ready to take us back to Baveno wh it did just in time for dinner at 6.
