2 September 1872 — Baveno
Monday. 2nd [September 1872]. We breakfasted before 8 & at ½ past started in the steamer for Arona. There we took the train after a great deal of trouble in getting the luggage off the steamer & weighed. We got to Milan at abt 1 & the train was a good deal late—owing to the quantity of people coming up to the Exhibition there. We went to Bruschetti’s Albergo Reale & had lunch at once; after it Morelli made his appearance & we went off to the Loan Exhibition of old pictures. We there met Le Comte Poldi who exhibits a good many pictures. We saw 2 splendid Canalettos wh Morelli wants Ivor to buy. We stayed at the Exhibn some time & then came home. Morelli dined with us at the table d’hôte at 6. Very few people. Afterwards we went to Gnocchis in the Galleriè & took coffee & then came home to bed.
