3 September 1872 — Milan
Tuesday. 3rd September [1872]. Morelli fetched Hy early in the morning & they went out. Maria & Rd were late so Hy & I had breakfast at 8.30. At 11 Hy came & fetched us & we took a carriage & drove to Mme Arrigoni’s to see if she had any nice lace to sell. Found her house chock full of things & she had some lace but her prices were extravagant so we came away without anything. Went on to Bazlini & found he was away so only looked round. His wife showed us some very fine old Venice point (3 flowers) wh was really good. As B was away they could not tell us the price. We went to the Hotel to lunch & then went to join Morelli at the Exn. Did not stay there long but went with Hy & Mor: to call on Mme d’Adda who received us in bed– She is a daughter of Pss Pio at Madrid—rather like her in the face but most unlike in manners being most agreeable & clever. Her daughter Css Brandolini was there & offered to take me to the theatre on Thursday. I said I should have left Milan. The Css Trivulsi came there with 2 grandchildren so we left & returned to the Exn to meet Rd & Maria & found them leaving. We took a drive round the town to the Arc de triomphe & by the lovely old hospital & returned to dinner at 6 at table d’hôte. We went to take our coffee at Carno’s a café with a nice garden & a band & there met Morelli.
