4 September 1872 — Milan
Wednesday. 4th [September 1872]. Morelli came to fetch us after breakfast & we walked to the Ambrosian library & spent some time there & then Morelli took me back to the hotel & sat there talking to me some time & then left before the others came in. After lunch Henry, Maria & Rd went out & I stayed in. The heat was very great & I was glad when the evening came with a little cool. Morelli dined with us at the table d’hôte at six & then we all went out taking Hill with us to see the Cathedral illuminated. The effect was magnificent. It was all lighted from the top with red Bengal lights & the towers, turrets, pinnacles & statues stood out against the lurid light like a fairy scene. As soon as the red was burnt out they lighted pale green– The building stood out white & beautiful when the illumination was over & was as beautiful almost as when lit up. The great gallery was also lighted fully & we tried to get into it but there was such a great crowd at the entrance that I got frightened & begged to get out. Maria & Rd had turned back sooner. When Hy, Morelli, Hill & I got out we could not find the others so we went to a caffé & then home.
