5 September 1872 — Milan
Thursday. 5th September [1872]. We left Milan abt 10 & had a hot & dusty journey to Verona altho’ thro’ a lovely country by the lake of Garda &c. On arriving at Verona we had lunch & then went out to see the churches & then I came back to the hotel early so as to draw from our windows wh occupied me till dinner time– Table d’hôte at 7. Sigr Ferrari called on Henry & persuaded us to go to the Piazza of the Arena where we had ices while band played– Had ices “a la Giardeniera” the best I ever tasted. There were a great many people there all in grand Parisien toilette & a great many with their hair slightly powdered. Ferrari said powdered hair had been the great fashion here last year but was now going out.
