7 September 1872 — Venice
Saturday. 7th [September 1872]. After breakfast we went to St Marks & spent there some time showing it all to Maria (who has never been to Venice before) then we went to Salviati’s shop & spent some time there. On our return home had a visit from Brown. After lunch we went to Murano. Met Css Pisani on the way & she invited us to dine with them on Monday. We found at the Murano glass works Mme Ristori & her daughter whom Dr Salviati had taken there to see the blowing. Mme Ristori has fine eyes & teeth but has otherwise lost her great beauty– Maria who had seen her act in her best days said she would never have recognised her again. Her daughter is very pretty. We stayed a long time to see the blowing & came back to dinner. Cortelazzo dined with us & we dined out on the Terrace in the open air. Afterwards we went to the Giardino Real to have ices there the band was playing & then we took a walk in the Piazza & walked home–
