9 September 1872 — Venice
Monday. 9th [September 1872]. I did not go out in the morning & stayed drawing & writing. After lunch Brown came to take me out in his gondola. He took me to the Academy—& to 2 antiquity shops & then we rowed out towards the Lido for a little air. He brought me home at 4 & I then sketched till the others came in. At 6 we dined with the Pisani’s & Brown was also there. Mme P has a small monkey of wh they are very fond & who swears & jumps &c with rage & jealousy when either of them touch or get near any stranger. The Pisanis have lovely pictures. A doge & his wife by Titian, two life size portraits, a picture of the landing of a Venetian Ambassador at London Tower & many others. After dinner we went to the Piazza & got ices–
