10 September 1872 — Venice
Tuesday. 10th September [1872]. We went abt 10 o’clock to Vianelli’s where we were all photoed except Henry who is to go on Thursday. Abt 11.30 we went off to spend the day at Torcello. Brown had lent us Ruskin’s Venice & en route I read aloud his description of Torcello & Murano. We went in to the church at Torcello to see the old mosaic wh is being repaired by Salviati & then we spread our luncheon on the tomb of an archbishop & there eat it surrounded by all the children of the island. I then set to work to sketch & did a scribble but there was a deal of distant thunder so we dared not stay for me to finish it & we went off home through Murano & got in abt 6. We dined on the terrace & went after to the Piazza.
