12 September 1872 — Venice
Thursday. 12th [September 1872]. Before breakfast Dr Salviati began to converse with Hy & remained during that meal & long after. At 11 we went out to Rietti’s where I got those 6 bits of Venice china for 50 fcs. Went also to Richelli’s & then Salviati’s & then home. After lunch we went off to Vianelli’s where Henry was photoed & then we called on Pss Clary whom we found at home. On leaving there we returned to the hotel & I sketched from the terrace till just before dinner when we had a visit from the Pisani’s. Ct Pisani said he remembered this house well as here he had courted his wife & he added “Don’t you remember Evelina that it was here, in that corner where you gave me yr first kiss?” She tried to hush him up. He then said, “Why! there was no harm in it.” It appears that she was lodging here with friends & was married from here– During dinner Brown came in. He had also been in at lunch time & brought me a huge box of biscuits wh he knew I liked. He has invited us to go with him on Saturday. We went to the Piazza wh was illuminated & a band playing & a great crowd of people.
