13 September 1872 — Venice
Friday. 13th [September 1872]. Sigr Ferrari came to take us out to the Exhibition of work wh is being held here now– We particularly examined the lace made at Burano as we are interested in reviving the manufacture of Venice lace in that Island. Some very good attempts have been made. A school has been founded & 2 old women have been discovered who have the old traditions of lace making & they are set to teach in the school. We went to the Correr Museum for a little while & to the Academy to take a last look at the pictures. It was very hot so I left Henry at Salviati’s & then went home. It was extremely hot & we took a row after lunch out on the lagoon to try & get a little fresh air but there was not a breath & the water was like oil. After dinner we went to the Piazza.
