10 November 1872 — Madrid
Sunday. 10th [November 1872]. Church at 11½. After lunch I went out walking with Henry—we called on the Bouillés found them in. Henry then left me at the Sickles where I paid a visit as this is their reception day– Henry went on to the Dragonettis & called there. I was home before him. Henry dined out at a “banquet” at the Sickles & brought home an account of the pretensions & magnificence of the affair—silver plates in profusion—bad food & all cold, bad wines &c all the Ministers & a great many diplomats 27 in all. The dinner was given to Genl Alaninos who is just going out as Governor of the Havana. It appears Del Corro was put into a state as Sickles sent out the Ministers to dinner all out of their proper order—& they were furious. Ff: Go: Sey & Mr Whyte dined with me. Mr W. told me his daughter is taken with rheumatic fever. Henry returned at abt 10½ & the rest departed. Heard to day how Mme Blondeel (who calls herself “Countess” since her husband’s death as he was a Roman Count) managed to get Mr Cordon of Maria Louisa Jooris, (1st Secy) sent to ask the King for it for Mme B. The King answered that he could not give it as Mme B. had no right to it & it was generally only given to Princesses– Mme B. then sent the 2nd sec. Ct Rensens to the Queen—asking her to get it from the King as it was Blondeel’s last wish that she should have it. The Queen, touched, answered that she would get it for her—but on speaking to the King he told her he had already positively refused it, wh Rensens had kept from the Q. The King however said that as the Q had promised it he would give way–
